Imagine setting up a job. The last operation is to thread an internal
hole with a 3/4-32 thread on a very expensive job, 15-5PH that
is about 32 HRc. We had been running an indexable single point
thread
mill. Setup time was horrible, averaging 2.5 hours. Production
time was just as bad: we only threaded 4 holes per hour. Tool life
was only 40 holes per insert.
Our OSG rep suggested solid carbide thread mills with TiAlN coating
that he said would reduce my setup time as well as increase tool
life and productivity. I had to see it to believe it! When all
was said and done, this amazing thread mill ran for 153 holes,
an increase of 194%. Setup time was reduced to less than one hour.
My productivity increased by about 450%! Calculated over the entire

I was using a European EXPENSIVE solid carbide thread mill in Inconel
718 that ranged from 42-44 HRc. Tool life with this thread mill
was the best for any thread mill I had found in the market; that
is until OSG provided 10-24 thread mill samples to test. I ran
these and found the tool life to be over 30% better than what I
was currently using! Not only that, the price on the OSG was considerably
more affordable than the EXPENSIVE brand! I am in the process of
switching all of my thread mills to OSG. What a great product from
OSG!
