Introduction

EXOCARB® THREAD MILLS
Thread Milling is an alternative method to cutting threads using circular interpolation and OSG`s new EXOCARB® Thread Mills. Thread Milling can greatly improve threading processes in a wide variety of applications.

What are the advantages of Thread Milling?

  • Small chip formation.
  • Little to no chamfer is required. Thread mills are great for full thread depth up to 1.5D!
  • Process requires less spindle torque, therefore even a smaller machine can produce larger threads.
  • Better finish and more accurate threads.
  • Tools are versatile:
    • Same tool can produce multiple diameters (with the same pitch)
    • Same tool can be used for blind or through holes
    • Same tool for right-hand and left-hand threads
    • Same tool can be used for internal and external threading (for pipe thread)
  • Longer tool life



Additional information on Thread Milling

  1. Increased cycle time and setup.
  2. 3-Axis Machine Tool is required.
  3. A rigid setup (machining center and toolholder) is required.
  4. Not good for deep holes: deflection is an issue if hole depth is greater than 1.5D
